US state department spokesman Richard Boucher on Wednesday contended that there has been a decrease in infiltration of militants across the Line of Control, citing it as evidence of the declining tension between India and Pakistan.
He described Secretary of State Colin Powell's recent visit to the subcontinent as 'successful', and said that Powell had called up Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Tuesday night.
However, he said that the call had nothing to do with Tuesday's terrorist attack on the United States Information Service office in Kolkata.
He added that Powell's call was a follow-up to his efforts to reduce tension between India and Pakistan.
Reacting to measures that may be taken by India and Pakistan to reduce tension, Boucher said, "There is a variety of measures that the parties can take in the political sphere, in the diplomatic sphere, in the military sphere that would help ease the tensions."
