Laloo Prasad Yadav to be released on Wednesday

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

Laloo Prasad Yadav would be released on Wednesday.

With Monday's Supreme Court order, he has now secured bail in all the five animal husbandry scam cases in which he has been chargesheeted.

Though he may not have to frequent jail now, he may have to move from Patna to Ranchi or even Dumka to appear in one court or the other where trial is going on.

The Supreme Court granted him bail in case number RC-68A/96, after the Ranchi high court had rejected his bail on the ground that the charges levelled by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the former chief minister was serious.

The case accuses Laloo of being involved in the fraudulent withdrawal of about Rs 380 million from the Chaibasa treasury during the period of 1990-96.

Laloo Yadav was the chief minister of the state during that period.

The Supreme Court, while granting bail to Laloo Yadav in another related case -- RC-47A/96 -- on December 14, had ordered that bail be granted to the accused persons in the fodder scam cases if they had undergone imprisonment for more than six months.

Laloo Yadav had already served the pre-trial detention of more than nine months.

Granting bail to Laloo on Monday the two-judge bench of the Supreme Court said that the former chief minister should be released immediately in accordance with the earlier order of the court issued on December 14.

The bench, however, restrained Laloo from making any public statement on the fodder scam case to gain political mileage.

It also asked the accused not to influence the witnesses and tamper with the evidence.

Laloo will be released on Wednesday, as his papers could not be submitted to the Ranchi high court on Tuesday.

He has been asked to furnish a bail bond of Rs 100,000 and surety of the same amount before the special court at Ranchi, where the trial in this case is going on.
