R-Day parade rehearsal passes off without a hitch

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Traffic in Delhi came to a grinding halt as certain routes were closed by the Delhi police to ensure that the full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day passed off without an incident.

As a security measure, the route of the parade this year was changed and it first passed from Rajpath to India Gate and then through Tilak Marg, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, Netaji Subash Chandra Marg and before finally reaching Red Fort.

Earlier, the parade used to pass through Connaught Place, Lahori Gate and parts of Chandni Chowk before reaching Red Fort.

The Delhi police had asked all the newspaper offices situated on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg not to operate till afternoon.

Traffic was diverted towards the ring road, where there was a massive jam for more than two hours.

Traffic coming from Karol Bagh side was diverted to the ridge road.

The offices in the vicinity of Rajpath were closed in the morning and the office goers had a harrowing time reaching their destinations because of the traffic diversion and the resultant jams.

It was only after the parade had reached Red Fort that the traffic restrictions were lifted and the motorists allowed to drive normally.
