Major power failure in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka

Many parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka went without electricity for over two hours on Wednesday due to tripping at some of the mainline thermal power stations in the two states.

All of Karnataka, except Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, and most parts of coastal Rayalaseema and Telangana regions in Andhra Pradesh went without power from 1250 hrs to 1430 hrs following a technical fault at the Vijayawada-Vijjeshwaram thermal station feeder.

The power breakdown disrupted rail traffic on the South Central Railway for about two-and-half hours and normalcy was restored with power supplied by the eastern grid, railway sources said.

The Ramagundam and Raichur thermal stations of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) tripped on account of 'under frequency conditions', Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Director (Transmission) S Shivamallu said.

The Sharavathi Generating Station (SGS) and Nagjhari Power House (NPH) were also shut down along with NTPC's plants, a KPTCL release said adding supply from the Varahi generating stations was extended to the SGS and NPH to re-start generation.

Power supply was being restored in the affected areas and efforts were on to resume supply to all essential services, railway tractions and hospitals, a release from the Andhra Pradesh chief minister's office said.

Power supply from the Ramagundam and Raichur thermal power stations are expected to be restored by Wednesday midnight, NTPC officials said.

The last major southern regional power grid failure occurred on September 11, which had led to power failure throughout Andhra Pradesh, except in Visakhapatnam and other areas served by the eastern grid.
