CBI hands over list of wanted
men to visiting FBI chief

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Central Bureau of Investigation chief, P C Sharma, on Tuesday handed over a list of 21 persons wanted by the agency to the director of Federal Bureau of Investigation, Robert Muller, and his deputy James T Cruso, when they called on him at his office in North Block.

These wanted men have taken residence in the United States. While nine of them are involved in terrorist activities, the rest have cases of cheating and forgery against them.

Nine names in the list are from Punjab: Pritam Singh, Jagtar Singh, Sukhvinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Kashmir Singh Pulla, Jagjit Singh alias Billa, Guruwant Singh, Lakbir Singh and Gurdev Singh.

V K Rustogi, whose brother Subhash Rastogi was arrested by the CBI in Delhi last year in a forgery case, also figures in the list.

During his discussions with the FBI director, Sharma pointed out that one Asif Raza Khan, who was arrested by the Delhi police from Lodhi Gardens recently, had admitted that a part of the ransom paid for the release of kidnapped Kolkata businessman, Partho Roy Burman, had found its way to Omar Sheikh.

Sheikh was among the three terrorists released by the government of India in exchange for the passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC 814 in December, 1999.

Sheikh in turn passed the money on to Mohammad Atta, the brain behind the 9/11 terrorist strikes in New York and Washington.

Incidentally, an organisation by the name of Asif Rezak Commando has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attack on the United States Information Service office in Kolkata.

Asif Raza was killed by the Gujarat police when he tried to escape from police custody.
