NDFB militants gun down 17 in Assam

National Democratic Front of Bodoland militants on Monday night massacred seventeen labourers, including nine women, in Assam's Darrang district, official sources said in Guwahati on Tuesday.

The militants also injured four others and set fire to 20 houses, they said.

A group of about 15 NDFB militants raided the remote village of Junglebari under Udalguri police station along the Indo-Bhutan border and asked the villagers to come out of their houses before shooting them, government spokesman Himangshu Sekhar Das said.

The village was inhabited by people from Bihar, who had settled in the area and were engaged as daily wage labourers.

Darrang Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Thakur told the Press Trust of India that an operation had been launched to nab the culprits.

Meanwhile, additional security forces had been deployed in the area, Thakur said.

The incident comes close on the heels of the massacre on January 16 of 13 Bengalis by NDFB militants in neighbouring Bongaigaon district.
