Youth's get-rich-quick scheme leaves Hyderabad businessman dead

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

In a sensational incident that sent shockwaves in business and trade circles in Hyderabad, a city businessman was abducted and stabbed to death by a youth who wanted to make a quick buck.

Dulichand Surana (53) and his wife Manju Surana (45) who were proceeding in a car to attend a new year-eve function at a leading star hotel when a stranger flagged them down near Begumpet requesting a lift on the pretext that his Maruti van had developed a mechanical snag.

After getting into the car, the hitchhiker whipped out a revolver and ordered Surana to park the car by the roadside.

Two sons of Surana, who were following his car, suspected something amiss when they saw their father's car stopping by the roadside.

Meanwhile, on seeing another car approaching, the hitchhiker ordered Surana to drive the car away from the spot.

Pushing aside Surana, he himself got behind the wheel and gave the slip to Surana's sons.

The hitchhiker then took the car to an isolated spot and demanded Rs 10 million from the Suranas. When the couple refused, he repeatedly stabbed them.

Subsequently, the hitchhiker dumped the couple and later abandoned the car in the Mahendra Hills area before taking flight.

Meanwhile, Surana's sons Ramesh and Dinesh, lodged a complaint with the Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar police.

When Manju regained consciousness, she sought help from the locals who informed other family members.

At around 0300 hours, Surana and Manju were shifted to the Apollo hospital where the doctors pronounced Surana dead on arrival. Manju was undergoing treatment at the hospital and her condition was stable.

Besides senior police officers, Police Commissioner Pervaram Ramulu also visited the spot.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday night, Ramulu said that the police nabbed a suspect 24-year-old Mayank Bohra soon after the incident.

The police recovered one revolver with five rounds and Manju's diamond-studded gold ornaments worth Rs 700,000 from his possession.

During interrogation, Bohra told the police that he wanted to make a fast buck. He claimed to have got the idea of robbing people from novels and crime thrillers.
