Army begins reconnaissance missions
in Ahmedabad

The army on Thursday night began reconnaissance missions in Ahmedabad, worst-hit by communal flare-up in the wake of the attack on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, and geared up for deployment by early Friday.

The army is expected to stage flag marches in the city, official sources said.

The arrival of the army follows a decision taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security in New Delhi on Thursday.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has requested more paramilitary companies to assist the state police.
