Well-known forensic and medico-legal expert Dr Pritam Phatnani died in Mumbai on Wednesday after a prolonged illness, his family said.
Phatnani was 60. He leaves behind his wife Bela and four children.
Phatnani, with his passion for forensic pathology and legal medicine, was much sought after for his legal expertise by medical researchers as well as senior police officers.
A popular teacher at medical institutions all over the country, Phatnani began his career as assistant police surgeon at the coroner's court attached to the JJ Hospital. He was later appointed as deputy coroner.
He was also appointed to assist the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission inquiring into the 1993 Mumbai riots.
A popular personality on television for his lecture series Doctor and the Law and Dead Men Do Tell Tales, Phatnani also set up the Medical Education Department at Glaxo Laboratories.
He had recently started a healthcare communication centre 'Helthkom' and also authored Legal Medicine for Family Physicians. He also has several publications in international scientific journals to his credit.
