Shiv Sena supports Maharashtra bandh

The Shiv Sena on Thursday night declared its support to the Maharashtra bandh, which was called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to protest against the attack on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, Gujarat.

"Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray has telephonically conveyed his party's support to the bandh," the general secretary of the VHP state unit, Vynkatesh Apdeo, said.

Earlier, the Sena leadership was maintaining a non-committal stance over its participation in the bandh.

"With the Sena's support, we are hopeful that the bandh would be total," Apdeo added.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made, with Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal warning of strict action against miscreants.

Security has been stepped up and Rapid Action Force, police commandos and State Reserve Police Force have been deployed in "sensitive areas", Bhujbal said.
