Kumar Thapa, who had tried to murder Gorkha National Liberation Front president Subhas Ghising in February last year, was killed in an encounter with police at Banarhat in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Thursday.
The Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri, Siddhinath Gupta said that the encounter took place at 10.30 am (IST) when a group of three persons, on being challenged, opened fire at the police.
In retaliation, the police fired four rounds killing Kumar Thapa -- who was also known as Kumar Chhetri, Vota and Nakkata -- on the spot.
One of the miscreants escaped while the other was arrested by the police, Gupta said.
The police seized a Chinese rifle with 19 cartridges, a carbine with two magazines and 31 cartridges from the arrested miscreant.
According to Gupta, Kumar Thapa was a resident of Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district and had left for Nepal last year after Ghising was attacked.
Ghising, also chairman of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, was seriously injured in an ambush at Satghumti near Kurseong on February 10 last year.
His five-car convoy was attacked while he was returning from New Delhi.
