Thackeray slams PM's appeal to defer temple movement

Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray criticised on Wednesday night Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's appeal to postpone the Ram temple movement following the violence in Gujarat.

"After the prime minister's appeal to stop the Ram temple movement, Hindus should assume that they are staying in Pakistan," Thackeray said in a hard-hitting statement.

Referring to Vajpayee's appeal, he said, "What else can we expect?"

"It is surprising that someone can even dare to ask for stoppage of the Ram temple movement," he added.

Taking a dig at secularism, he said, "If the brethren of so-called secularists are behaving in such a gruesome manner then damn that secularism."

"Have the Congress president and other so-called secular leaders in the country noticed the setting afire of Hindus at Godhra or are they going to ignore the massacre of Hindus?" he said.
