PIO card scheme to be restructured

The government intends to restructure the Persons of Indian Origin card scheme and significantly reduce the fees for the card, President K R Narayanan announced on Monday.

Making a special mention in his address to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, he said, "The government has accepted the recommendations of the high level committee on the Indian diaspora that January nine be celebrated annually as 'Pravasi Bharatiya Divas'.

It was on this day that Mahatma Gandhi, who was a non-resident Indian in South Africa for almost two decades, returned to India in 1915.

Up to ten awards will be conferred on prominent NRIs or Persons of Indian Origin on this day next year, he said.
