Launching search and destroy operations in Achham district, where Maoists had carried out a bloody attack last week, security forces killed 37 rebels in Nepal.
The retaliation came at a day when a nationwide strike called by the rebels virtually closed down Kathmandu, the capital.
Fifteen rebels were killed in encounters in Surkhet district, where security forces intensified operations to locate those involved in the carnage in Achham, defense ministry spokesperson Bhola Silwal said on Saturday.
Thirteen rebels were killed along the border between Kalikot and Achham districts, the defence ministry said.
Nine Maoist were killed in neighbouring districts. Four were also killed in Dang, three in Salyan and two in Doti districts, the ministry said.
Security forces also destroyed terrorist training camps in Chhapra in Kalikot district.
Speaking at a function, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said: "Maoist will be crushed if all the people, political parties and the government unite to fight the terrorists."
