At least 32 policemen and four Maoists guerrillas were killed in an attack on a police post at Sitalpati, 260 km west of Kathmandu on Thursday night, according to senior officials in Kathmandu.
Nepal's Home minister Devendra Raj Kandel said the Maoists attacked the post manned by 85 policemen late last night.
"The Maoist casualty must be more than four, but only four bodies were found on the spot," the minister said.
The incident occurred just hours after Nepal's parliament voted for a three-month extension to a state of emergency first imposed in November to combat a violent Maoist rebellion.
