Nationwide searches by CBI to counter corruption

In a nationwide drive to tackle the growing menace of corruption, the CBI on Friday carried out search operations at premises of several government officials, including that of a commissioner of Income Tax.

Highly placed agency sources said that nearly 500 sleuths of various wings of the country's premier investigating agency swooped on the premises of government officials suspected of corruption in almost every part of the country.

The sources said that the searches were carried against such officials against whom the agency had prima-facie evidence that they had abused official positions for personal gains.

The sources said that the searches began early in the morning as a part of the agency's special drive to counter corruption in the country.

The process was going to continue till late night and the reports from almost all the states would be compiled after that, the sources said.
