Derailment toll rises to two, probe begins

One more passenger succumbed to injuries on Thursday taking the toll in the Sayaji Nagari Express derailment incident near Surat on Wednesday evening to two while eight others were undergoing treatment in hospital with the condition of one being described as critical.

Twenty-seven-year-old Kalpesh Ramesh Dave succumbed to head injuries early on Thursday, railway sources said adding 21-year-old Surat resident Kamal Pujara had died on Wednesday night.

Seventeen passengers with minor injuries were discharged from hospital, the sources said.

A two-member high-level team, comprising railway Safety Commissioner Prashant Kumar and Safety Officer Arun Dube, arrived in Surat to make an on-the-spot inquiry into the derailment of 10 bogies of the Bhuj-bound train coming from Mumbai.

The team would also meet members of the public and railway staff and submit their report to Western Railway authorities on Monday, official sources said.

Several Delhi-bound trains were diverted through Bhopal while some others have been cancelled, WR sources said.
