One killed, 21 wounded as train derails near Surat

One passenger was killed and 21 were injured, six of them seriously, when ten bogies of a Bhuj-bound express train derailed near Udhna railway station, about eight km from Surat, on Wednesday.

Unofficial sources put the number of injured at 50.

The accident occurred at around 1920 hours, nearly five hours after the Sayajinagari Express left Bandra Terminus in Mumbai.

The dead person was identified as 21-year old Kamal Pujara from Surat, hospital and police sources said.

Among the seriously injured were three minor children, the sources said.

Western Railway General Manager V D Gupta said the cause of the derailment could not be immediately ascertained.

Relief operations had been taken up on a war footing and a special train carrying a dozen officers rushed to the scene to bolster the operations.

Movement of trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Delhi sector was disrupted following the derailment.
