A dawn-to-dusk Bihar bandh called by the seven Left-wing student organisations on Wednesday affected normal life in the state.
The bandh was called to protest against the police firing in Bhagalpur, which claimed the lives of two students.
In Patna, shops, major business establishments and almost all the educational institutions remained closed while traffic was thin.
Some persons took to the streets deflating tyres and smashed the windscreens of the few vehicles on the roads, police sources said adding that bandh supporters even disrupted rail movement in some places.
But no major violent incident was reported from anywhere in the state, they said.
According to sources, over 500 bandh supporters, students and left party workers were arrested all over the state till noon.
The bandh is supported by all the Left parties, including the CPI, CPI-M, CPI-ML, Forward Block, RSP, SUCI, and other organisations associated with the Left-wing.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident.
Police sources said that security personnel had been deployed at several places, including highways and along railway lines.
