The pro-Pakistan terrorist outfit, Jamiat-ul Mujahideen, has claimed that its cadre shot down the MiG-21 fighter plane near Srinagar on Thursday.
The Indian Air Force, however, ruled out any such possibility.
A person claiming to be the spokesman of the outfit told the Press Trust of India over phone that a JuM man fired a missile at the plane, causing it to crash on a house and kill one person.
He said the plane was shot down in response to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's appeal to terrorists on Wednesday asking them to surrender arms.
"We will not lay down arms and every such appeal will be met with the same reaction," the spokesman added.
IAF spokesman Squadron Leader R K Dhingra said in Delhi that the possibility of the aircraft being hit by a missile or ground fire was ruled out.
