The National Commission for Women has urged the central government to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the case of the alleged forcible marriage of a woman named Kanchan Mishra with Sultan Mian, a known criminal.
The NCW, which is also investigating the 'forcible' marriage, had directed the Bihar police last week to arrest Sultan Mian and 'produce' Kanchan Mishra before it within ten days.
Sources within the NCW, however, told rediff.com that the commission is unhappy with the efforts of the police to nab Mian and 'produce' Mishra.
The Bihar police has announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the arrest of Sultan Mian.
According to the police, Mian married Mishra at a mosque in Mainpura locality in Patna on November 6. But the police said that there was no evidence that Kanchan was forced into the marriage, as even her mother, Suchitra Devi, had not filed a complaint.
Devi, who appeared before the commission along with the ten-month-old-son of Mishra, said she not know where her daughter was.
Some ministers and police officials were backing Mian, local media reports said. The reports even said that a senior inspector was present at the marriage.
