Five children, including three girls, were killed in a fire that broke out in a temple in Vishnu Garden, Delhi, on Saturday evening when Janmashtami celebrations were on, the police said.

The children died of suffocation and burn injuries, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west district) Dipender Pathak said. The fire broke out at 2000 hours (IST), he added.

The fire may have been caused by a short circuit, he said. Fire brigade, police personnel brought the fire under control within half-an-hour.
