Foreigner issue to be more relevant
during polls: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party president M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said the issue of "foreign-born" persons occupying the office of prime minister would become more relevant at the time of elections.

"[The] BJP is not against any individual. But the issue is of great importance," he said on the sidelines of a training programme for BJP workers in Mannivakkam, Tamil Nadu.

Whenever the issue had been raised, the people had given the "proper" judgement that only a person born in India should occupy the post, he said.

Asked whether the Centre was contemplating to bring in a legislation to prevent foreign-born persons occupying constitutional posts, he said it was for the government to decide on this.

Asked for his comments on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's remarks that Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was a "foreigner", should not become the prime minister, he said, "She only propagated the BJP's ideals."

Asked whether Jayalalithaa had made these remarks to elicit the BJP's support in the cases against her, as alleged by some Congress leaders, he said the National Democratic Alliance government would not interfere with the judiciary, as it was independent.

He said Jayalalithaa's remarks did not amount to coming closer of the BJP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. "Now our job is to concentrate on the expansion of the party in Tamil Nadu. There is no question of [an] alliance. Only when polls are announced, the party will think of [an] alliance with any party in the state," he said.

On Gandhi's remarks that non-Congress governments in the country were not interested in the welfare of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, Naidu said before making such criticism she should not forget that it was the Congress that had ruled the country for over 45 years.

"If the SCs and STs are suffering, as per her remarks, the fault is on the part of Congress and not on others", he said.
