A Patna court on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail petition of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora -- the hero of the 1971 war with Pakistan.
The sessions judge dismissed the petition pending in the court of S N Tiwari, Judicial Magistrate, 1st Class, Patna.
The general had filed the petition after a judicial magistrate in Patna issued a non-bailable warrant against him on charges of cheating, criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of property.
Mohar Lal Majhi, an undersecretary in Jharkhand's Department of Mines, had filed the criminal complaint against the general and seven others in February 2001.
The case relates to alleged non-refund of deposits made to a Delhi-based financial company, Hindustan Financial Management Limited, of which Aurora was the chairman.
Prosecution lawyer Mohammed Akram opposed the prayer for bail on the ground that Aurora, in collusion with the other accused persons, committed criminal breach of trust with the complainant's money amounting to Rs 500,000. The general committed similar breach of trust with the money of other depositors to the tune of over Rs 12 crore, he added.
Defence lawyer Y V Giri sought bail of Aurora on the ground that he was only a ceremonial head of Hindustan Financial Management Limited. He said that the general was 86 years old and was suffering from several diseases.
