Custodial death in Andhra; 5 excise personnel suspended

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday ordered the suspension of a circle inspector, a sub-inspector and three excise constables following the death of a person in custody at an excise sub-station in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh.

According to an official statement, the chief minister also ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident, wherein the victim, identified as Venkanna, who was nabbed for involvement in illicit distillation of liquor, was brought to the excise sub-station at Nelakondapalli.

Subsequently, Venkanna was found lying unconscious near Nelakondapalli bus station. Later, he died in the district headquarters hospital at Khammam.

A criminal case was also registered against the excise personnel.

Naidu expressed anguish at the incident and conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
