Majority of transporters in Bihar call off strike

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Except one faction, most of the striking transporters called off their nearly one-month-old indefinite strike late on Thursday night following an agreement with the Bihar government.

RJD supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav told rediff.com that the transporters will get several concessions as per the agreement reached on Thursday night.

As many as seven associations participated in the negotiations with the government before calling off the strike.

Only the Bihar Motor Transport Federation (BMTF) has refused to call off its strike.

BMTF's demand is that the government first rollback the hike in road tax announced on July 16. The hike has been of up to 10 times in some cases.

BMTF says the hike would drive transporters out of business while the government says it would increase its annual revenue by 50 per cent.
