Charges framed against Ansari, 8 others
in USIS case

A city court on Thursday framed charges against gangster Aftab Ansari and eight others in the case relating to the January 22 attack on the United States Information Centre in Kolkata.

The City Sessions Judge, 11th Bench, P L Dutta framed charges under section 121A-121 [waging war against the State], 122 [collection of arms to wage war], 302 [murder], 307 [attempt to murder], 333 [obstruction to public servant from discharging their official duties], 427 [mischief]), 467 [forgery] and 468-471 [utilisation of fake documentation as original], of the Indian Penal Code.

Charges were also framed under sections 27(2)(3) [waging war by utilising banned arms] and 25(1B)(a) [procurement of banned arms and ammunition] of the Arms Act.

September 23 to 27 was fixed for recording of evidence.

Ansari is also the prime accused in the abduction of shoe baron P R Burman in Kolkata, diamond merchant Bhaskar Parekh in Gujarat and the attempted abduction of Kolkata-based businessman Ganesh Mahalingam.

Ansari, with alleged links to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Harkat-ul-Jehadi, was also allegedly involved in attempting to smuggle in explosives, including RDX in Gujarat, as well as a conspiracy to blow up the Howrah Bridge and the Howrah Railway Station.

He was arrested in Dubai a day after the American Centre was attacked. He was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation in February.
