Laloo slams Jaya for labelling Sonia

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav on Thursday criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for calling Congress president Sonia Gandhi a 'foreigner'.

Yadav, a member of the Rajya Sabha, said Gandhi was a citizen of India, and calling her a foreigner was "an insult to being an Indian".

He said Jayalalithaa's statement was unwarranted since the Supreme Court had already made it clear that Gandhi was a citizen of India and enjoyed the same rights as any other citizen.

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party was using Jayalalithaa to attack Gandhi on an old issue at a time when the Congress was emerging as an alternative to the ruling National Democratic Alliance at the Centre.

Yadav alleged that Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani had a role to play in this matter since Advani feared Gandhi's rise before the next Lok Sabha election.
