Cops rob passengers of Sabarmati Express

Three policemen robbed at gunpoint passengers travelling in a general compartment of the Sabarmati Express with two persons being injured in the ensuing scuffle, the Government Railway Police said in Kanpur on Thursday.

The passengers, about three dozen of them, were robbed by the armed cops between Orai and Pukhrayan stations on the Kanpur-Jhansi section late on Wednesday night when the train was on its way to Faizabad from Ahmedabad, GRP sources said.

According to reports, the policemen entered the coach and demanded Rs 50 from each passenger. When the passengers objected, they allegedly started beating them with gun butts, injuring Santoo, a resident of Unnao district and Ram Babu of Faizabad, police said.

They trio also opened the luggage of some passengers and, after looting their belongings, disembarked at Pukhrayan, the GRP said.

However, the passengers did not lodge a formal complaint at Kanpur, they added.
