Parliament attack plan hatched in Pakistan: Court told

The Delhi police on Thursday told a city court that the conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001 was hatched in Pakistan with Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar and his two close associates being the architects.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajbir Singh, who is also the investigating officer in the case, deposing before Special Judge S N Dhingra as the last prosecution witness said beside Azhar, others involved in the conspiracy were JeM operation commander Ghazi Baba and one Tariq Ahmed.

"We learnt that a terrorist training camp was being run in Pahalgam, so our team went there in search of Ghazi Baba and other conspirators, but without success," Singh said.

During his cross-examination by the counsel for accused Syed Abdul Rahman Gilani, a suspended lecturer of the Delhi University, Singh said Gilani and co-accused Afzal were taken to Kashmir to track down Ghazi Baba and Tariq Ahmed.

Singh told the court that after thorough interrogation of the four arrested accused -- Afzal, Shaukat Hussain Guru, his wife Navjot Sandhu alias Afsan Guru and Gilani -- senior officers decided to impose provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act on them.

He said Afzal and Shaukat willingly recorded their confessional statement under the POTA and denied the defence counsel's allegation that the special cell of the Delhi Police tortured Gilani.
