HC grants bail to Maneklal in Coomar Narain case

The Delhi high court on Thursday granted four months' interim bail to 80-year-old businessman Yogesh T Maneklal, who has been sentenced to 14 years' rigorous imprisonment in the Coomar Narain espionage case relating to the supply of secret documents to some Western countries in the early 1980s.

Allowing his plea for interim bail on health grounds, a bench comprising Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Justice H R Malhotra directed Maneklal to execute a personal bond of Rs 20,000 and two sureties of the same amount before the trial court.

The court said that in view of the petitioner's ill health and old age, it was granting him interim bail for four months and asked him to surrender before the trial court on the expiry of the term.

Maneklal's counsel Ram Jethmalani said he was suffering from hypertension, which the jail authorities had confirmed, and therefore needed treatment other than that available in the jail hospital.

The appeals of Maneklal and eight others have already been admitted by the high court for hearing.

The others who have appealed against their convictions are V K Palaniswamy, P Gopalan, T N Kher, S L Chandana, Swami Nath Ram, S Sankaran, Kishan Chand Sharma, and Amrik Lal.

The remaining four -- K K Malhotra, Jagdish Chander Arora, J M Tiwari, and H N Chaturvedi -- have not yet filed their appeals.
