People's War kills abducted constable

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The People's War Naxalites killed a police constable who was in their captivity, after they had abducted him, along with four others, from two police stations in Visakhapatnam district last Friday.

But the PW set free three other abducted constables and a home guard, captured after raids on Anakapalle, Chodavaram police stations and a sub-treasury office.

"After declaring him as class one enemy of the Naxalites and tribals, we have liquidated him. We warn all those policemen engaged in repressive measures that they would also meet the same fate as Chittibabu [the slain constable]," the PW said in the statement.

The Andhra Pradesh police, however, said, "There is no confirmation of the PW claims. We have no idea whether he is alive or killed. We have not recovered the body. Visakhapatnam Superintendent of Police Atul Singh is on the job of ascertaining facts."
