Transporters' strike in Bihar intensifies

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The nearly month-old transporters' strike in Bihar has intensified with those who plying vehicles also deciding to join the agitation.

According to the transporters, those who were 'forced' by the state government to suspend their stir a fortnight ago have also joined the stir.

Sources said the autorickshaw association, which has now re-joined the strike, was disappointed by the state government's failure to roll back the hike in road tax as per the assurance given when it suspended its stir.

The indefinite strike entered the 29th day on Thursday with no end in sight as the state government and the Bihar Motor Transport Federation are unable to reach a compromise.

After filing a First Information Report, the state police has issued arrest warrants against four members of the federation as part of the state government's efforts to end the stir.

The government is under pressure from all political parties, including its ally, the Congress, to end the strike by negotiating with the transporters.
