Court rules out dilution of charges against Union Carbide ex-chief

A Bhopal court on Wednesday dismissed a CBI application seeking dilution of charges against Warren Anderson, chairman of the Union Carbide Corporation at the time of the Bhopal gas disaster in December 1984.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Rameshwar Kothe also directed that the court be informed about steps being taken by the CBI for the early extradition of Anderson.

The court said instead of taking steps for Anderson's extradition, the CBI had filed a meaningless application, which deserved to be rejected.

Anderson is a proclaimed absconder.

As per this application, Anderson was to be tried only for negligence in place of culpable homicide - the original charge against him.

The CBI had filed the application for dilution of charges against Anderson in the light of a Supreme Court judgement of September 13, 1996.

The CBI application was opposed by Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan convenor Abdul Jabbar Khan, Satinath Sarangi of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action and N D Jaya Prakash of the Gas Peedit Sangharsh Samiti.
