Pak government draws up plan to counter Bhutto, Sharief

Pakistan's interior ministry has prepared contingency plans to deal with the possible return of exiled former premiers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharief, according to a report in the Daily Times, Islamabad, on Tuesday.

Bhutto and Sharief plan to accompany their families to Pakistan before the October 10 general election, citing the deteriorating health of their parents, the report said.

Officials will take Sharief's family into 'protective custody' on arrival and transport them to their estate in Raiwind by helicopter, before sending them back to Saudi Arabia immediately, the paper said.

In the event of Bhutto accompanying her mother, the government has decided to arrest and detain her in the Sihala Rest House in Rawalpindi, in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau, which has already issued arrest warrants for her in various cases.

"If Bhutto arrives to lead her party in the elections, her party workers will not be allowed to gather at the airport and she will be taken out through non-regular points and routes," the paper said.

If Sharief's brother Shahbaz returns to independently lead the Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz, he will be detained and then deported to Saudi Arabia, the report added.
