Govindacharya may return to active politics next year

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Former Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary K N Govindacharya hinted on Tuesday that he would rejoin active politics early next year. "Till January 2003, I am devoted to my study," he said.

Govindacharya is on a sabbatical to study globalisation and its impact on the Indian economy. "After my study, I will think of rejoining politics," he remarked.

Govindacharya was in Patna to participate in a function organised by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, offshoots of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the BJP's ideological parent.

He said he had received a good response to his letters to BJP members of Parliament, politicians, social action groups, and others in which he had asked questions about the globalisation policy being pursuing by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Responses ranged from good suggestions to critical analyses, he said. "Some asked me to rejoin active politics to rescue the country from going in the wrong direction," he added.

Govindacharya refused to divulge anything that his correspondents may have said about the Vajpayee government's performance or the changes in the BJP. He also refused to comment on them himself, saying, "Now I am not in a position to react to anything related with the government, its policy, and party matters because I do not know much."
