Naxalites turn on the heat in Andhra Pradesh

Naxalites of the outlawed People's War group of the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist, shot dead a police head constable, beat up two executives and a watchman of a cement factory, and torched a forest range office in separate incidents in Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali said Head Constable Shankarji was shot dead by members of the Krishnapatti dalam (armed squad) at Chitrala village in Chandampet block.

The victim, working in Gundlapalli police station, had gone to his native village. Between 1230 and 0100 IST, the Naxalites came to his house, called him out, and shot him at point-blank range.

In another incident, Naxalites raided the residential quarters of Sri Chakra Cements near Karampudi in Guntur district at about 0300 IST. They picked up the company's general manager, a deputy general manager, and a watchman and gave them a sound thrashing before letting them off.

The extremists questioned the company staff for sacking four workers of the factory two years ago. The trio has been taken to Hyderabad for treatment at a corporate hospital.

Naxalites belonging to the Panagal dalam attacked a forest range office near Kollapur in Mahbubnagar district in the early hours of Tuesday. They set fire to office records and also burnt down three lorries laden with wood. The loss of property is estimated at Rs 600,000.
