BJP leader from Orissa forms new party to serve tribals

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

Salkhan Murmu, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Orissa, on Sunday formed a new outfit called the Jharkhand Disam Party to 'take care of tribal interests'.

Murmu announced his decision to split from the BJP at a public gathering in Andhari, a block headquarter in Maurbhanj district, which he represents in the Lok Sabha, the convenor of the new party, Niranjan Hembram, told rediff.com on Monday.

Several tribal leaders of different states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Madhaya Pradesh, and Assam, had attended the gathering, he said.

The party was formed because the Centre and the BJP were anti-tribal, Hembram said, adding that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which was formed to take care of tribal interests, had also become opportunistic.

Interestingly, the BJP had served a show cause notice to Murmu for his anti-party activities.

"We are awaiting details. After that suitable action against him would be taken," state BJP president Manmohan Samal said in Bhubaneswar.
