Punjab CM, governor reject Sidhu's resignation

The chief minister and governor of Punjab on Saturday rejected the resignation of suspended Punjab Public Service Commission chairman Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu.

Sidhu was trying to quit through "the soft way" by resigning, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said in Chandigarh.

"If Sidhu was so concerned about the dignity attached to the high office, he should have resigned immediately after a case was registered against him after being caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh," he said.

Raj Bhawan sources said the government had sent its recommendation to the Governor, Lt Gen (retd) J F R Jacob, who had received the resignation letter from the registrar of the Supreme Court earlier this week. The governor had also rejected the resignation letter, sources said.

Sidhu, against whom a presidential reference is pending with the Supreme Court, had submitted his resignation on August 12.

The presidential reference asked the court to inquire into the malpractice listed against him by the governor due to his alleged involvement in the cash-for-job scandal. Subsequently, the court issued a notice to Sidhu on August 12.

But before the court issued the notice after hearing Solicitor General Harish Salve, the counsel for Sidhu stated that he wanted to resign from the post on his own to "save the dignity of the constitution post". The reference would come up for hearing on Monday.
