Irate Bihar transporters remove president, to continue strike

The Bihar Motor Transport Federation on Wednesday removed its president, who had announced suspension of the transporters' strike, and called for a statewide bandh on August 9, nullifying efforts by the Bihar government to end the stir.

The transporters are on an indefinite strike protesting against the hike in road taxes by the state government.

Despite BMFT president Jagannath Singh's announcement of suspension of the strike on Tuesday night, most commercial vehicles remained off the roads for the seventh day on Wednesday indicating that he had lost the confidence of the transporters.

General secretary Sagirul Haque told reporters after a meeting of the BMFT's executive body that Jagannath Singh's announcement was made in his individual capacity and that the federation was not a party to the agreement reached at Chief Minister Rabri Devi's residence.

He said the executive body has dismissed Jagannath Singh for his 'unilateral and unauthorised' announcement to suspend the strike till August 25 and appointed Uday Shankar as the new working president.

In addition, the federation had decided to call a bandh on August 9 to mount pressure on the state government.

The BMTF is not the sole representative of the transporters, but holds considerable sway.

Jagannath Singh had citied the drought and flood situation in Bihar as the reason for suspending the agitation following an appeal by Rabri Devi and RJD leader Laloo Yadav.
