Bhutto's new party submits documents to the EC

K J M Varma in Islamabad

The newly formed Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, constituted by former Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto, submitted a list of its office bearers and accounts to Pakistan's Election Commission on Tuesday, in compliance with the new electoral rules formed by the ruling military regime.

In a press release, following the notification of its formation on Monday, the PPPP said it has submitted a list of its office bearers, accounts and documents, comprising certificates of intra-party polls, party constitution and bank statements to the Commission.

The PPPP nominated Bhutto loyalist and Pakistan Peoples Party vice-president, Makdoom Fahim, to submit the documents to the Election Commission, as required under the Political Parties Order of 2002, the release said.

The release also said that the PPPP was formed on August 5 in Islamabad, as a separate entity, to meet the requirements of the new laws passed by the military regime, including the one passed soon after Bhutto was unanimously elected as chairperson of the PPP on July 28, 2002.

A total of 57 political parties have so far submitted their documents and information to the Commission for registration, the Commission said.

The Election Commission has set a deadline of Monday, August 12, for the parties to submit documents on internal elections and accounts.
