Heavy rains lash North India, end dry spell

Heavy rains lashed several parts of northern India on Sunday, ending a prolonged dry spell in the region.

Torrential rains hit Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttaranchal, and Rajasthan, providing much-needed relief to the people from the drought.

Three persons drowned and five tractors and trucks were washed away in flash floods in Hamirpur district, 140km from Shimla.

The Mandi-Pathankot national highway was blocked for some time by a landslide near Thakurdwara, but traffic resumed after the blockade was removed.

Many sectors in Chandigarh and the adjoining township of Mohali also received sharp showers.

In Punjab, the Nangal dam recorded 28.6 mm of rain.

The towns of Kurukshetra, Ambala and Rothak in Haryana also received rains.

In Uttaranchal, farmers reeling under drought-like conditions heaved a sigh of relief as heavy rains hit several parts of the hilly state since Saturday evening.

The districts of Uttarkashi, Tehri, and Pauri, which were worst affected by the month-long drought, also experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.

Rishikesh recorded the highest rainfall of 73.3mm while Uttarkashi got 59.9mm and the capital Dehradun recorded 62.9mm.

Karnaprayag, Mukteshwar and Udhamsingh Nagar also experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.

In Khatima and adjoining areas in Udhamsingh Nagar, a dam and a canal were breached following heavy rain and more than 36 huts were washed away on Saturday.

In Rajasthan, the entire Jaipur region recorded 9.3cm of rain. Moderate to heavy rains occurred in Kota, Bundi, Alwar, Dungarpur, Udaipur, Ajmer and Baran districts.
