Kargil is a disaster of Musharraf's making: former teacher

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's former teacher said that the Kargil incident was 'a disaster of Musharraf's making' and he had 'personally rebuked the General for his role'.

The remark reported by the New Yorker magazine in its latest issue did not identify the teacher.

Musharraf, who was the army chief during the Kargil conflict, said Pakistan would not give up Kashmir.

"The people of Kashmir won't give up. It has been our national interest since 1947 and we won't give it up," he told the magazine in an interview.

When asked about the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's assertion that she would fight the October election in Pakistan, Musharraf said she would 'go to jail' if she comes back.

Musharraf is facing strong opposition in his country for extending his presidential term by five years through a referendum that was boycotted by major political parties.

He said the constitutional amendments proposed by him would 'ensure better governance of the country, once he gives up his powers to the prime minister after the election'.

Musharraf said that he has 'taken the country out of the morass', and added, "It has been two and a half years of tremendous danger, but I can say with satisfaction that my government has done well."

He complained that the West saw him 'as a dictator and an aberration to democracy'. "They should have seen how I am governing. Is it dictatorial? Is it autocratic?" he asked.
