Flood toll in Bihar rises to 157

Twenty-eight fresh deaths in the last 24 hours have pushed the toll in the current spell of floods in Bihar to 157, even as all the major rivers continued to flow over the danger mark, official sources said.

Thirteen million people have been affected by floods in 6,415 villages spread over 21 districts in the state, according to sources at the relief and rehabilitation department.

Standing crops valued at nearly Rs 20 million and houses valued at over Rs 400 million have been destroyed, sources said.

The Central Water Commission report said rivers like the Gandak, Bagmati, Burhigandak, Adhwara and Mahananda were flowing above the danger mark, posing a threat to the embankments and inundating fresh areas.

While the Bagmati was flowing 70cm and 116cm above the danger level at Benibad and Hayaghat, respectively, the Mahananda continued to flow 28cm above the red line at Jhawa.

The army has stepped up relief work in the worst hit districts of Gopalganj, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Supaul and Samastipur.

All vital embankments in the state are reported to be safe so far.
