8 missing in Arunachal after flash floods

Eight persons, including seven army personnel, were missing following flash floods caused by torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. Meanwhile, major rivers continued to flow above the danger mark in Bihar.

Seven army personnel were missing as the floods washed away two iron bailey bridges near Rupa in the state.

West Kameng Superintendent of Police T Ringu said in Itanagar that three bodies had been recovered.

The two bridges near Rupa, which were washed away, used to link West Kameng and Tawang districts.

Extensive damage was also caused to the Bhalukpong-Tawang road. Around 500 feet of road on each side was washed away between district headquarters Bomdila and Dirang and Bomdila and Nafra. Four houses were washed away and five others were damaged between Bomdila and Dirang.

In Bihar, reports from Patna said the Ganga, Gandak, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Mahananda and Adhwara flowed over the danger mark posing a threat to their embankments and inundating fresh areas.

Relief and rescue operations were launched on a war footing in the flood-affected districts with army and air force helicopters dropping materials, including food packets, medicines and polythene sheets.

Ten more persons died in the floods taking the toll in Bihar to 129. While five persons drowned in two separate boat capsizes in Samastipur district, three persons died in Madhubani and two in Gopalganj.

Chief Secretary S N Biswas and Home Commissioner U N Panjiar along with other senior officials held a meeting with Chief Minister Rabri Devi on Sunday to chalk out strategies to transport relief materials to 19 flood-affected districts in view of the indefinite transporters' strike since Wednesday midnight.

The state government has cancelled the leave of doctors posted in the flood-affected districts.

Relief and rehabilitation department sources said on Sunday that a population of over 10 million, spread over 5,957 villages in an area of 23.95 lakh hectares of 19 districts of north Bihar, were affected by the floods.

In Assam, the flood situation improved on Sunday with the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries receding.

Road and rail communication in some of the severely affected districts like Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara and Morigaon remained suspended and the waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries in these districts were still above the danger mark.

The current wave of floods in Assam has claimed 31 lives with one more death reported from Sonitpur district. More than 20,000 houses have been completely or partially damaged.
