Crucial BJP national council meet on Saturday

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Approximately 1500 Bharatiya Janata Party members, including central and state ministers, Members of Parliament, legislative party office bearers and morcha presidents are congregating in New Delhi for the national council meet on Saturday, which would discuss among other issues the polls in Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and party chief M Venkaiah Naidu are among the notable leaders to be present in the meet, where the recent changes effected by the leadership will be approved, according to the BJP General Secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

"Of course, the discussions will also focus on the upcoming assembly polls in ten states, including Gujarat and J&K," Naqvi said.

He indicated that the party's strategy for the polls, especially in these two states, would be unveiled by the prime minister and his deputy.

The national executive meet is expected to begin at 1730 hours (IST) on Saturday, soon after the national council meeting ends.

Naqvi said the party might also discuss its bad performance in the February assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Punjab.

According to another senior leader, the party office-bearers in the states will be given various 'political targets' to achieve within a timeframe.

"We are confident that Vajpayeeji and Advaniji will lead the way in our party's good showing in the (impending) polls," he said.

The meet is expected to adopt a political resolution, which will virtually be the party's roadmap for the future.
