Manipur courts resume business

Courts in Manipur resumed business on Friday after a nine-day strike, marking an end to the judiciary-legislature row in the state, official sources said.

Chief Justice of Gauhati high court Justice P P Naolekar and Justice H K Singh heard cases at the Imphal bench of the high court on Friday, the sources added.

District and sessions courts in Imphal East and Imphal West districts too functioned normally.

Justice Naolekar, who arrived in Imphal on July 31 for talks with government officials, would leave for Guwahati in Friday.

The crisis between the judiciary and the legislature erupted after a flurry of contempt of court cases came up for hearing at the Imphal bench.

While most of the cases were against IAS officials of the state, in one particular case Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was summoned by the judges.

The state legislature retaliated by removing security provided to the court in Imphal, which led to a statewide strike by lawyers.

At a meeting with representatives of the High Court Bar Association and the All Manipur Bar Association on Wednesday, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said he was unaware of the withdrawal of security from the Imphal bench court complex.
