Samata, JD-U members stage walkout in LS over Bihar floods

Dissatisfied with the government's response to the havoc caused by the floods and the drought in Bihar, agitated members from the Samata Party and the Janata Dal-United from the state on Friday staged a walkout in Lok Sabha along with the Rashtriya Janata Dal members.

The members from Bihar demanded a special financial package and immediate relief for those affected by natural calamities.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Devendra Prasad Yadav, JD-U said over 100 people had lost their lives in the floods, which had affected 17 of the 34 districts, including Madhubani, Saharsa, Darbhanga and Samastipur.

He demanded the waiving of loans extended to small and marginal farmers and a special package announced for northern Bihar.

The JD-U member gave a three-day 'ultimatum' to the Centre to initiate prompt action on the relief front failing which his party would consider the 'next course of action'.

Renu Kumari, Samata Party, said the affected people were facing numerous problems as a result of the floods with fears of an epidemic looming large.

Ram Prasad Singh, RJD, accused the Centre of meting out a 'step-motherly' treatment to Bihar.
