Sixty-one districts in UP declared drought-hit

Sixty-one of the total 70 districts in Uttar Pradesh have been declared drought-hit with the state government including four more districts in the category on Thursday.

Faizabad, Barabanki, Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar were the latest additions to the list of drought-hit districts, an official spokesman said in Lucknow.

Assessment of the remaining nine districts was on, he added.

Recovery of all revenue and other government dues have been suspended in the drought-hit districts till March 2003, he said, adding special relief works have been launched in these districts.

The state government has demanded Rs 70 billion central assistance besides a special package for the state to deal with the severe drought conditions.

The government, on its own, has launched Rs 6 billion worth relief works in the drought affected areas and has instructed district magistrates to utilise their relief funds for providing financial relief to the people in the affected areas.
