HC issues notices to Thackeray, two others

The Bombay high court has issued notices to Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and two others in connection with an appeal filed by the Maharashtra unit chief of the Samajwadi Party, Abu Asim Azmi, challenging a magistrate's order dismissing his defamation plea against the three.

Azmi had filed a defamation complaint against Thackeray, who is also the editor of Shiv Sena's mouthpiece Saamna, Sanjay Raut, the executive editor and Subhash Desai, the printer-publisher of the newspaper.

Saamna had on July 1, 1998 published an editorial titled 'Who is this Azmi?' alleging that Azmi, an accused in the 1993 bomb blast case, had used money power to secure bail.

"His hands are stained with the blood of the blast victims and he should be hanged in full view of the public," the editorial said.

His defamation plea was dismissed by the magistrate when on April 23 this year Azmi failed to attend the court.
